Gadara Farm offers bespoke farm-based programs to meet the needs of our community where people are supported to work and learn on the farm. Barefoot Therapists collaborate with Gadara Farm to offer an enriched outdoor experience by providing any necessary therapy support.
At Gadara farm you are welcomed as an individual and provided with what you need to reach your personal goals. It is a magical place to enjoy the therapy programs and work on the land, in nature and with animals. Barefoot have OT, Speech Pathology, Art Psychotherapy, Psychology and Therapeutic Teaching professionals running a range of Animal Assisted and Farm Focussed programs.
Gadara Farm also offers a Volunteer Program for older teens giving them a level of work experience, capacity building and a level of working independently. Volunteers may work by themselves or accompanied by a carer.
Permaculture and small mixed crop rotations with companion planting incorporate low tech old school farming methods from earlier times. Nothing is wasted and animal manure becomes compost for vegetables and care is given to ensuring no chemical wormers or pesticides are used. Our crops are supplied fresh to the farm gate shop, preserved, bottled or dried.
Animal health is managed predominantly through the use of diet, exercise, herbs and essential oils. Paddock rotations and cleaning is essential. Horses, donkeys, goats, chickens and dogs are residents of the farm with each species having a particular role e.g. guard donkeys for the chickens to keep foxes away. Initially an equine property some of the horses are older and here for wellbeing. Equiculture is central to domestic equine and asinine care and while our farm is too small for some of these approaches, we incorporate as much of this knowledge as we can for the sake of both environment and animal welfare. We take our husbandry in an alternative direction staying as close to nature as possible and we use only kind horsemanship training techniques which take time, patience and a positive philosophy.
We work long hours on the farm and despite it’s small size there is a lot of hands on work to be done every day of the year. In order to support others to learn how to apply our techniques we offer farming opportunities to people of different ages and abilities. Inclusive farming is part of the green care movement which promotes farm work as a great antidote to the mental ill health of seclusion and indoor screen based living and also can promote development in other keys areas of life. We hope to truly engage people and to spread the joy of living with animals and growing produce at home no matter how small your yard might be, so we welcome families to come and help out on the farm with as much support as each individual may need.
We promote a model of care across our organisation which is child centred and family sensitive.
We are located at 1/16 Henry Wilson Drive, Rosebud (on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula) and Gadara Farm in Boneo.
