Art Therapy

Art Therapy

Barefoot Therapists’ Art Therapy Program is run by certified and registered Art Therapist, Sam Gummer. Art Therapists are mental health professionals who use art, media, and the creative process to facilitate the exploration of feelings, improve self-awareness, and reduce anxiety for clients.

In this context, art is not used as a diagnostic or teaching tool, but as a medium to communicate emotional experiences, stemming from cognitive, neurodiverse, psychological, and emotional issues, which may be confusing and distressing for the client.

The creative process of art making through drawing, painting, clay, mixed media, photography, and an unlimited selection of other mediums, helps to express, communicate and process matters that are known, unknown or not able to be spoken about, opening avenues for transformation and change.

Therapy rooms are based at Henry Wilson Drive and Gadara farm, where there are unique opportunities to incorporate therapeutic nature play and animal-based activities alongside art making and psychotherapy.

A flexible, client lead approach is applied to the therapeutic process, encouraging young people to explore, play, create and express in a manner of their own choosing, in a way that they find most engaging and fun.
