Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists work with children on increasing independence in everyday activities. We assess and analyse where issues are arising and causing barriers, if they are physical, emotional, social or sensory.

Speech Pathology

Speech pathologists work in the areas of communication and swallowing disorders. They also assist children and families in reaching optimal function in social settings and getting along with peers by developing play and social skills.

Dietetics

Our dietitian Justine offers individual sessions and joins our Occupational Therapist and Speech Pathologist for our food learning clinics. Justine assists families in assessing and planning appropriate nutrition via food or supplements.

Equine & Animal Assisted Therapists

Our Equine-Assisted Therapy sessions focus on therapy goals within activities of equine care and handling. We offer training for other OTs based on our years of experience and practical approaches.

Welcome to Barefoot Therapists

Barefoot Therapists provides therapy to children on the Mornington Peninsula, and support for their families.

We offer a skilled team of Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, a Dietitian and Animal & Equine-Assisted Therapists who provide a team approach to your therapy journey. A multidisciplinary team approach provides ‘best practice’ support for children and teenagers. We welcome everyone by offering a trauma aware, family focused and neurodiversity affirming practice. Barefoot acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and their connections to the land, sea and community. We are located on the traditional lands of the Boon Wurrung / Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging and extend our respects to our community.

We provide services from birth right through the teens and transitioning to adulthood from our centre in Rosebud and our farm in Boneo. Indoor programs suit most children and outdoor sessions particularly suit children where the clinical environment has not been effective or motivating for them to achieve goals. Research suggests better engagement and positive outcomes for managing anxiety when animals, nature and the outdoors is part of the session.

We work with you to find the programs which best meet your child’s requirements, whether that is based at our indoor centre, our gardens, our farm, in nature or in the community.

Our Barefoot Philosophy

Our philosophy is to offer effective clinical therapy but with a ‘non-clinical’ feel. This means the kids are motivated and engaged in a wide variety of activities in helpful and fun everyday settings, meanwhile our therapists are applying approaches which have been well researched and professionally developed within a therapy framework.

Your Therapy Journey

From your first contact, we aim to help you secure effective therapy sessions with professionals who can best meet your needs. Initial appointments and assessment sessions will inform choices for future therapy. Following assessment, therapists will use their clinical reasoning to work with you to decide which individual and group services will help achieve goals and be motivating for your child.

The assessment process may include standardised assessments or some extra choices such as visiting your home, community venues and school environments across the Mornington Peninsula. This holistic process aids us in getting to know your child’s current strengths, interests and future needs. The assessment process equips us with information which can help you make the best decisions about therapy requirements. If your child has already had a thorough assessment at a different service and you have a report, your assessing therapist at Barefoot may be able to use this information to speed up your assessment process, and move you more quickly into therapy sessions. We can also write reports required for NDIS and education funding if needed.
